The Major League Baseball (MLB) Opening Week has come and gone, and the New York Yankees were off to a historic start, creating that championship hope fans have been waiting for since 2009. A hope that many didn’t believe was there after the off-season.
The Yankees are coming off another disappointing end to the season after losing in four games to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series (ALDS). With this early exit, and having made the World Series the season prior, many fans were expecting a big recruiting off-season from the Yankees front office to once again make that championship push.
However, with the only big move made in the off-season being the re-signing Cody Bellinger, many felt let down. One of the fans who felt this way is our very own Dean of Students Carlos Perez.

“I thought Cashman [Yankees General Manager] was going to make some moves that didn’t happen. I just need Cashman to make some moves, that’s all I’m saying,” said Perez.
General Manager Brian Cashman brought the Yankees roster into this season with a “running it back” mentality. Going into their Opening Day series against the San Francisco Giants, their opening roster consisted of 26 men, three of whom are new to the Yankees. Outfielder Randal Grichuk, Starting Pitcher Ryan Weathers, and Relief Pitcher Cade Winquest (who as of April 15th has been designated for assignment) were the only new faces for the Bronx Bombers on Opening Day.
If some names appear to be missing, it’s because they are. Youngster short-stop (SS) Anthony Volpe has found himself beginning this season on Injured-Reserve (IR) after suffering a torn labrum in his left shoulder in May of 2025.
Superstar ace pitchers Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole have both also found themselves on IR to start the year. While Gerrit Cole is still recovering from Tommy John surgery in March of 2025, Carlos Rodon is recovering from surgery done on his left elbow in October of 2025.
Even upon his return from injury, Yankee fans still hold high expectations for their “Aces.”
When asked about Gerrit Cole and his expectation upon returning, F&T Athletic Director Dan Marascia voiced his thoughts as to what he is expecting.
“With all the support here at 223 he gets…I think he should come back strong. He’s a competitor, he’s a beast when it comes to his work ethic, and I think he’s gonna carry the team this year with the wins as a pitcher” said Marascia.

After the first eight games, the Yankees held a 7-1 record, which few Yankee fans expected and things were looking good. Since starting 7-1, the Yankees have since gone on to drop the last 7 of their 9 games, currently sitting at a 10-9 record. Leaving them 2nd in the AL East.
Even with all this early success, fans were still aware of the teams they must keep an eye on in the American League as the season progressed.
“Blue Jays, they went far last year, the Seattle Mariners could be tough this year, I want to go Boston Red Sox but I don’t want to say that too loud,” said Community Coordinator Nate Medina.
Like all good things, this start for the Yankees has hit a rather abrupt end.
Fans have been brought back to the reality of this Yankees team. They’ll now tune in more intently as the team battles their way through the season. With the hopes of winning the American League East, and the ultimate World Series Pennant.
