As the cold weather continues to break records, it’s important that we continue to remember those that are less fortunate and who might need a warm meal.
“Giving back” is a very important aspect of being a part of the boy’s varsity basketball team. The team takes pride in staying connected with the Bronx community including putting together resources that homeless people can use to help them survive in their situation including food.
“Feeding the homeless yearly is a privilege to me. It feels great because there are so many people who need food and clothing and we are able to provide that for them,” said Coach Campbell.

Coach Campbell reminds his athletes about how valuable our community is.
“Every person, no matter their living or economic status, is important to the community. I try to make sure the kids know that the team is more than just basketball,” said Coach Campbell.
All players are required to participate in the community events including starters. All players learn how important it is and how good it feels to give back to the community.
“It feels good knowing that you’re doing a blessing for somebody’s life.” said SBP player Jayden Thomas.
“It reminds me that we all need to support each other and it also makes me feel I’m a part of something bigger than myself,” said Mohammed Cisse (Class of 2026).
Often, players are required to put together bags with sandwiches, toiletries, socks, gloves, and some other necessities.
“You never know what other people are going through in life. One day your life can be great, next minute things can take a turn for the worst and having people and resources are helpful in getting back on your feet,” said Coach Campbell.
The focus on the community also has a positive impact on the boys’ program.

“It’s extremely important to be a part of the community, because community support helps the programs thrive,” said Athletic Director Dan Marascia.
As a community we should learn from our basketball team and work to make a difference in our community. Maybe you’re not doing the same exact thing as them but just small donations to organizations that work to help homeless people can make a bigger difference than you expect.
