While internships have always been a valuable asset to a student’s resume that helps them jump start their career in the professional field, HS223’s approach to internships considers the student as a whole and not just what they get out of the program.
“We believe that all students should have access to every opportunity and the main focus is career corrected learning, and we want to make sure that every student is involved in one workplace internship before they graduate,” said Ms. Devore who coordinates the Work Place Challenge at HS223.

Internships at HS223, including Workplace Challenge, ISP, ELP, and Peer Mentoring, are also lucrative with students making $250 to $4,000 depending on the length and depth of their work.
“I did ISP internship, I worked at a shop where I worked on a unicycle, I got paid five hundred a week,” said Mohammed Cisse (Class of 2026).
But the benefits of these programs go beyond the financial.
“A lot of times students are bored at school and having a job encourages them to come to school and be competitive. Internships help students be independent, self-efficient leaders,” said Dr. Sarah Benis Scheier-Dolberg who runs the peer mentoring program at HS223 and has long had a hand in internship opportunities.
Students have a lot of options when it comes to what internship opportunities they wish to pursue.
“We promote a variety of internship opportunities like Work Place Challenge that try to give students authentic experiences. It’s different hearing a perspective from somebody else other than your teacher,” said Dr. Sarah.

“I have done workplace challenges, ELP, WLG, and SYEP. They’ve shown me a lifestyle of working and exposed me to a workplace environment. I gained knowledge about being a leader and having responsibilities… I’m planning on doing more since it prepares me for my future” said Hector Abreu (Class of 2027).
HS223’s take on internships whether students are going to college or not, definitely provides motivation for them and advances their skills for their future use.
“[Students are] solving a real world problem working in a team to make a stellar presentations and it makes you stand out on your presentation skill, working in a team, and being professional which shows leadership,” said Dr. Sarah.
