Getting college credits while in high school has been the dream of many students at HS223. But there have been barriers in the past.
“Hostos was an option when I was a student but it wasn’t during school days” said HS223 college advisor Ms. Ortiz (Class of 2017).
But now students at HS223 are allowed, as early as 10th grade, to take college-ready courses at Hostos Community College during the school day.
“It’s better now because it’s during school days and it gives the students more time. Similar programs have been offered but it wasn’t this inclusive. More students have the opportunity to (go to Hostos) now that they are happening during the day,” said Ms. Ortiz.
HS223 partnered with Hostos Community College starting January 2025 to give students the opportunity to gain valuable experience, and free college credits, as a student at a CUNY school.

“Hostos is the most convenient college students can attend,” said Assistant Principal Ms. Downs. “I want students to practice independence by exploring college campuses and experiencing that feeling of being at a school.”
HS223 plans on keeping a long term partnership with Hostos for these classes that are giving students the feel and education of a college campus.
“We would consider expanding but then students would have to take public transportation. Hostos is the most convenient college our students can attend,” said Ms. Downs
Students who decide to attend CUNY colleges and pass their classes could save thousands of dollars for courses they have taken during their High School years.
“They are getting college credits which is free money,” said Ms. Downs. “Getting a taste of the college experience building independence.”
Students attending Hostos are able to walk there as the campus is only a few blocks away from the school.
“I got to experience what it’s like being at a college and teachers not being on you,” said Alex Gomez (Class of 2026). “Having to be independent helps you know if you want to go to college or not.”
This semester, students are able to choose between taking courses in criminal justice or acting. Students attend class every Monday and Wednesday 7th-8th periods.
“At Hostos, you’re given a lot more freedom and less restrictions.” says Adrian Marrero (Class of 2027).

Ultimately, HS223 plans to continue their partnership with Hostos Community College giving students the feel of college, and college credits, well into the future.
“Going to Hostos is a great experience because you adapt to the college environment,” said Corey Romero (Class of 2027).
