Two weeks ago, I went with my friends to see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is the sequel to the original movie, Beetlejuice, directed by Tim Burton in 1988. While the movie features some of the original cast and characters, they also added new ones to add on to the story. Starring Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti and others.
In the new movie, Jenna Ortega plays Astrid Deetz, Lydia Deetz daughter (who’s played by Winona Ryder), who doesn’t like being known as her daughter because of her reputation as a ghost hunter. Astrid finds a model of a neighborhood in the attic of her house. She also finds a paper that sponsors couple counseling sessions from someone named “Betelgeuse”. But, she has no idea what the story is behind this so-called “Betelgeuse”. Meanwhile, her mom, Lydia, knows exactly who that is and warns Astrid but she takes it as a joke until everything starts to change.
Something done really well in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was the humor. The jokes really matched up with what was going on in the movie, and they also had good jokes which referenced the first movie. Even though to some people who didn’t watch the first movie, they wouldn’t make as much sense, they were still mostly funny nonetheless.
One of the funniest scenes was when there was a wedding scene which was a reference to a scene in the original Beetlejuice movie. But also, a part where Lydia started huffing and puffing like moose which startled her mom, Delia Deetz (played by Catherine O’Hara), while she sat on the porch. I thought these scenes were funny since the acting was portrayed in a funny way but certain people might not get it because the jokes were made to make viewers laugh out of embarrassment.
Although, in some parts, the humor was a bit cringey. For example, the scene where Lydia and Rory get couple’s counseling and there’s a joke about spilling your guts which leads to people’s guts actually spilling out. It wasn’t that funny though. Also, some of the plots are a little rushed than they should be. For example, the problem that Astrid ends up facing ends a little too quickly. The problem only lasted about 2-3-ish minutes before already ending which wasn’t really ideal. But thankfully, it doesn’t ruin the whole movie.
Overall, the movie, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a good movie to watch especially if you have seen the original but save your money! Watch Beetlejuice Beetle once it streams on Max in early November instead of the theaters.
