Expectations are high for the Lady Cougars volleyball team this year.
They have been practicing since summer for this season. Many returning players are on the team. They want to win at all costs, and practice is getting hard. Everyone wants to achieve their goal of having a great season.
Coming into their second game of the season, the Lady Cougars were 1-0 and were playing Longwood Prep Academy.
The game started with the Lady Cougars shaking hands with the other team and wishing them luck on the game. The game started after each team received a speech from their coach. After the players got in their given position, the Lady Cougars were the ones serving first with Isabella Sanchez, one of the seniors and returning player of the team starting off.
The Lady Cougars lost the ball, they seemed affected but they decided to brush it off after hearing their teammates sitting down yell “SHAKE IT OFF SHAKE IT OFF!!”.
The start of the game seemed like it was going to be a hard game. The truth was that the only reason why they were getting left back was because of the small mistakes they would make and the lack of communication the team was having with each other.
Longwood Prep seemed new but the Lady Cougars were not as competitive as they wanted them to be.
“The girls will play well if they are consistent on the serves and give good attacks to the opposite team,” said head coach Coach D’Amore.
The first set lasted around 19 minutes and 33 seconds, which the Lady Cougars won 25-11 by learning from their mistakes and finally communicating with each other.
The next server was Ashley Robles. Lady Cougars seemed to feel stressed since the ball didn’t make it to the other side of the net, it was not a really great thing to happen at the start of the set. They missed the serve the other team had to serve, the libero, Alexa Zhagui, caught the ball but unfortunately the ball was lost again.
At this point, the game game seemed as if it was going badly.
But the Lady Cougars concentrated more on their play and connected more as a team, they were able to save the ball. Making it their first score in the game. Sophomore Deborah Akintude was the one that made the first score. It looked like she had a lot of people supporting her which was nice to see, everyone was excited when she scored a point. After scoring, it was Debora’s time to serve. She s
The people in the bleachers went crazy
One more highlight came when Jaquelyn Guerrero served. Guerrero kept scoring and the opposite team was not able to save the ball any of those times.
The Lady Cougars won 25-8.
Coach D’Amore and Lady Cougars all agreed about how this game was not really competitive. They would have preferred if the opposite team was more competitive towards them.
Our school volleyball team has a lot of expectations for this year, they want to connect more as a team, communicate and learn together. All this to be able to have fun playing volleyball while they win together as a team!
