I am a native Spanish speaker who came to HS223 without “professional English”
The first day at HS223 was confusing and awkward just as any first day for anyone in the world is. But in my case, the first days were confusing as I tried to understand the classes and their explanations due to the English.
As the months went by, I got used to hearing the language, school and its system. However, I still do not have professional-level English and I had difficult moments; understanding the classes that spoke English, especially because I couldn’t understand the class. I managed to receive help from many teachers and students to help me understand English. Some of the teachers who helped me a lot were Ms. Jimenez, Ms. Devore and Ms. Barrington.
Despite the difficulties and with the passage of time, I managed to begin to speak English. I even began to speak with people who do not speak much Spanish. I learned that you can continue progressing even if you do not have much knowledge of professional English as long as you keep trying.
Being a guy who speaks mostly Spanish and not having professional English didn’t stop me from receiving many opportunities that I had never had before. For example, trips to important and historical places, leadership travel programs, and college trips.
In the future, I hope that I can get better at English, go to college, and be able to help people translate and be an interpreter.
I think my experience shows that you can get ahead no matter what problems arise, there will always be a solution to something.
