Lacrosse, often called “the fastest sport on two feet,” is a captivating game with deep historical origins. Evolving from a traditional Indigenous sport played by Native American tribes, lacrosse is now a competitive modern sport enjoyed worldwide. Played on a field similar in size to a soccer field, teams of ten players, including a goalie, aim to score goals by shooting a rubber ball into the opposing team’s net using a lacrosse stick, or crosse. Known for its quick pace, the game requires athleticism, agility, and hand-eye coordination. With its mix of physicality, skill, and strategy, lacrosse provides an exciting spectator experience and promotes camaraderie among players. From youth leagues to professional levels, lacrosse is gaining popularity, highlighting its rich heritage and promising future.
Things are looking very bright for the MSHS223 lacrosse team after being runner-ups vs Brooklyn Tech. The young team with new talent is looking to take it all the way and finally bring home a championship for the first time. They are looking to change the outcome from last season with a heartbreaking loss.
For the Middle school, this is looking like a new season with a new team after a loss in the playoffs to the Bronx lacrosse team. They are trying to come back and win it all. “I’m looking forward to the kids becoming better teammates and possibly winning the championship,” says Assistant Coach Andrew. He is one of the ex-players of Coach Jaques Ward and works for Harlem Lacrosse.
The girl’s lacrosse coach says “As a coach, I’m most excited to lead the team in their season and see their success from all of the work we have put into this season after it’s done.” Coach Lilly, an ex-D3 lacrosse player for the Pitzer College in Southern California is now working at our school with some of the best girls the sport can offer. For coach Lily, lacrosse has made her closer to her family and friends and given her the chance to teach youth lacrosse. Lily says “There are a few things that have driven my life such as education, family, my huge passion for working with kids and lacrosse. Taught me my biggest lessons, gave me my greatest friends, and connected me with my family. Let me follow my dream and be a college athlete. Brought me to the Bronx and worked for Harlem lacrosse.”
Lacrosse is a sport that is a big part of many people’s lives and has opened many doors for coaches such as Coach Ward. He says “Lacrosse has impacted my life because it has made me strive for greatness and made me a relentless person and opened many different doors to teach the youth the sport.” He is an ex-All-American who went to Skidmore College. He is now a Harlem lacrosse coach. Assistant coach Andrew says “It’s improved my health, overall gave me a lot of opportunities and changed the way I look at certain situations. It has helped me truly grow as a person as well because it opened a new idea in my mind that I wanted to teach young kids. And now I can coach such young souls into future D1 or D3 players and also be able to change these kids’ lives.”
Lacrosse helps people improve their lives by giving them opportunities and a sense of possibility. Coach Ward and many others believe that playing lacrosse can help people and give them the chance to be great.
