On October 4, 2023 the South Bronx Cougars traveled to KIPP NYC where they defeated the home team 2-0 in girls volleyball.
It was a tough game. There were multiple players on KIPP that were able to score many points.
Jaynesali Smith (HS ‘27) affirmed that, “The receives and passes were decent.”
There were also difficulties with the ref when multiple plays calls were made against the Cougars.
“I feel like there were a lot of bad calls. I remember this one time, the other team touched the net and the ref didn’t call it, but when we did the ref immediately called it,” emphasized Smith (HS ‘27).
When the Cougars were down though, Nana Samake, Juanita Guzman , and Isabella Sanchez stepped up.
“I don’t know who directly got us the most points,” Jena Nieves wondered (SBP ‘24). “But Nana and Juanita gave us a lot of aces as well as Isabella.”
In the end, the Lady Cougars would not be denied their third win of the season. South Bronx Prep is now undefeated as they stay home to play Bronx Studio School for Writers and Artists on October 11.
So is it luck or are the Lady Cougars really that good?
“I think we’re just that good. We’ve been practicing for a long time, and we’ve been getting better. Our serving, our defense and blocking have been very consistent throughout the practices. Us winning three games in a row really proves that.” Nieves confidently exclaimed (SBP ‘24).
